General information about cookies

What are "cookies"?

The pages that you have just visited use cookies. We would like to explain briefly how and why cookies work. What are they useful for? Do they present a security risk?

Cookies are necessary to design interactive web sites. Since many users can browse a web site simultaneously, the server will only notice which user is at which point at any given time with the help of cookies. This enables the server to ensure that each user receives the information that he or she has requested.

Cookies are small pieces of data (usually 255 characters) which a web server transmits to your Internet browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer) where they are saved as cookies. When you visit this site again at a later time, only the cookie that was transmitted to you by the web server will be retransmitted.

What are cookies useful for?

A cookie is a simple way for web sites to administer user settings. For example, this might be certain information that you entered on our pages during a previous visit.

Cookies are also very useful for constantly enhancing our online offering. Cookies tell us which pages are popular and which aren't.

Can cookies read information from your hard disk?

No! A web server can only read cookies that it has generated itself - and the only information it will be given is information that it has stored itself at some time in the past.

Is it true that cookies are a security risk?

Cookies do not contain information that wasn't previously known to the web server. The only information that a web server can receive from a cookie is the fact that the user has visited this page previously! The web server can certainly not find out which other sites you also visit. It can only call up its own cookies.

Do cookies violate my privacy?

We don't think so. After all, your privacy is very important to us! Besides, the slightest danger of data espionage would mean that each "surfer" would deactivate cookies. There is a good reason why "Accept cookies" is activated after the installation of your web browser!

Java

It is possible that your browser is configured in such a way that it does not accept JavaScript.

How to change the Internet Explorer settings:
In the "Tools" menu go to "Internet Options". A new window opens where you can set the Internet options.

Click on the "Security" tab and there on the "Custom level" button. A new window opens where the security settings can be changed.

In this window change the "Active scripting" setting to "Enable". Close both windows and press the "OK" button. (The settings for "Java", "Paste operations" and "JavaApplets" are not relevant for the presentation of these pages.)
