2nd Vehicle.Security.Barrier.Conference
Last week, the second Vehicle Security Barrier Conference (VSBC) took place on the CTS crash test site, organized by the BTU Cottbus. The conference was dedicated to improving security in public spaces, particularly in view of the increasing need for protection against vehicle attacks. The aim of the event, which attracted over 100 participants, was to introduce municipalities, event organizers and security experts to solutions and technologies - such as vehicle barriers - for securing public areas and events.
The conference was characterized by high-profile speakers. Mayor Markus Lewe opened the event, while Police President Alexandra Dorndorf gave an insight into the security strategy of the G7 summit. On behalf of the organizer, Christian Weicht gave a presentation on access protection concepts. Detlev Schürmann led the program of the other speakers.
Renowned exhibitors presented their latest access barriers, and as a special highlight, in addition to a crash test in a ditch, a high-security barrier from a manufacturer was also successfully tested live.

New test area according to the "TL-Leitbaken 97"
With the general circular "Road Construction No. 23/2022" of December 14, 2022 from the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport, Department 07.3, CTS now meets all the necessary requirements to carry out this test. The department was also rated positively in the last DAkkS surveillance audit.

Bird dummy for aviation: chickens no longer have to die for this
The company CTS Crashtest-Service from Münster has invented an artificial chicken. It is used in bird strike experiments - to protect life.
By Andrea Walter
It looks and feels like a chicken about to end up in a cooking pot: a bit soft, without feathers, a plastic skeleton shimmers through the silicone. Peter Schimmelpfennig and Mirko Dobberstein from CTS Crashtest Service worked on this artificial bird for a long time. It must be lifelike to be approved for bird strike experiments. That's why every chicken produced here has the same weight: 1.8 kilograms, that's the rule.
Real chickens for bird strike experiments
What hardly anyone knows: To this day, real chickens are used in the aviation industry for the prescribed bird strike tests, for example on engines. They are killed just before the attempt but must not be dead for more than 40 minutes or rigor mortis sets in and that would falsify the attempt.

New test procedures for TL guidance beacons and TL guidance elements
According to the general circular "Straßenbau Nr. 23/2022 vom 14. Dezember 2022 des Bundesministeriums für Digitales und Verkehr aus dem Sachgebiet 07.3", it is possible for CTS to carry out tests according to the TL-Leitbaken and TL-Leitlemente for a transitional period until 31 December 2025. This is based on the already existing accreditation according to EN 1317 and EN 12767 until the testing procedure with the complete range of services is included in our scope.

CTS is a consortium member in the drafting of DIN SPEC 91414-2
CTS was already involved in the drafting of DIN SPEC 91414-1 in April. Now the kick-off for Part 2 followed. "Requirements for the planning of access protection for the use of tested vehicle safety barriers" - this is the title of DIN SPEC 91414-2, in the development and elaboration of which the CTS team around Michel Osterkemper will be significantly involved. This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Construction and Home Affairs (BMI) and is expected to take one year to complete. (symbolic image)
DIN SPEC 91414-1 - developed with the cooperation of the CTS test laboratory
CTS has actively participated in the development of the DIN SPEC 91414-1 standard for mobile vehicle barriers. Part 1 of the new standard deals with the requirements, test methods and performance criteria of mobile safety barriers.
DIN SPEC 91414-1 is available for free download from Beuth Verlag at www.beuth.de.
We are looking forward to testing your innovative drive-through barriers soon.

Successful conversion to the new DIN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 for CTS

New partners for the simulation of impact tests
Traffic restraint systems often have to be checked for their functionality by dynamic and virtual simulations before the first crash test.
To this end, CTS has been cooperating for some weeks now with EDAG Engineering GmbH and GDTech S.A. "The aim is to offer our customers holistic and, above all, independent solutions, right up to the successful completion of standard tests", says Dipl.-Ing. Peter Schimmelpfennig (Managing Partner of CTS).

CTS crash tests on FHWA list
The tests carried out at CTS according to the specifications of MASH (MASH 2009 Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware / MASH 2016 Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware Second Edition) can be found on the international FHWA list. Especially in the USA, this list serves authorities to inform themselves about current systems available on the market and to access the corresponding test certificates.

Conversion of the crash system
In these days the crash system was completely rebuilt. A conversion that Managing Director Dr. Mirko Dobberstein has high hopes for: "Even before the conversion measures, we were able to move vehicles weighing up to 70 t without any problems, but this is now taking place within a significantly optimised tolerance range. The crash system can now be adapted even more flexibly and spontaneously to the most varied test requirements".
Already this week successful tests according to MASH were carried out. This standard is the benchmark for crash barriers used in road traffic worldwide.
"Since we have become even more flexible thanks to the retrofit, new possibilities arise in scheduling. We are now able to accept orders for standard tests, especially according to MASH, even at short notice", says Dipl.-Ing. Peter Schimmelpfennig (Managing Partner of CTS).
