The PRIMUS at CT

As part of a TV project, the new PRIMUS dummy underwent a CT scan.
At the A&E surgery department of the University Hospital Münster, Dr. Roßlenbroich and Dr. Schülke used a computer tomograph to produce images of a PRIMUS dummy that had suffered internal damage as a result of a previously conducted crash test. The images were compared by expert for accident reconstruction Dr. Holtkötter with a real injury picture and correlated with the accident sequence of events.

Counter-terror and mobile vehicle barriers 2019

Last week the GPEC event took place for the third time at the Münsteraner crash test facility. Around 200 visitors,  primarily decision-makers from federal authorities, cities and local authorities, were able to listen to specialist lecturers over the course of the two day event and also obtain information from the international exhibitors on the current possibilities on building and event safeguarduing. Included in the programm was also the implementation of four live crashes in order to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of vehicle safety barriers. Besides two Standard crash tests, Dipl. Ing. Ralf Bührmann (head of test department) and his team carried out two other crash tests. Firstly, by means of a semitrailer truck, the effectiveness of a trench as an alternative security concept was examined. Subsequently, test manager Ralf Bührmann personally demonstrated that a conventional transporter in the case of a collision with a HGV is not an alternative for a vehicle safety barrier.

PRIMUS-crash at AZT

Entirely for digital accident clarificataion for modern vehicles, the 7th Allianz automobile day at the AZT (Allianz Center for Technology) in Ismaning took place. How digital accident clarification in the future can be developed was discussed by the board members of the Allianz, experts of the AZT as well as representatives from the automobile industry and authorities. As a demonstration, a crash test was carried out with a PRIMUS from the biofidelic dummy family of CTS. Here's the link to the video: https://youtu.be/pA67O6_9VrM.

New measurement technology in the Biofidelic Dummy

In the scope of the “14th PraxisConference for pedestrian protection” Dr. Michael Weyde (Engineering office Priester & Weyde) reported on the biofidelic dummy as a vulnerable road user in full-scale crash tests. In the course of the event, the CTS-crash team were also present on site. Crash test manager Ralf Bührmann and group leader Kai Schulte demonstrated live two pedestrian crash tests. The special feature: for the first time, the latest measuring sensors from Kistler were installed into the biofidelic dummy. Thus, the measurement technology directly built into the dummy could be read out immediately after the crash test and provide new insights on the collision-related movements and loads acting on the dummy. The documentation of the autopsy of both dummies and the analysis of the measurement technology will be made available to the participants shortly and can also be downloaded from the CTS crash test database.

RWTH Aachen at crash test

Last week, students from RWTH Aachen were guest at the CTS crash test facility. Besides a detailed guided company tour, Dr. Möhler’s students had the possibility to attend a presentation on the range of areas of CTS before heading to the crash test area. Test manager Ralf Bührmann and his team had prepared a crossroads collision with two SUVs. The participants could watch live which forces act in such a collision.

ITAI Conference

In Lutterworth, England, this years’ ITAI Crash Conference took place. For this occasion, Peter Schimmelpfennig (Managing Partner CTS) had also travelled there and spoke about the new biofidelic dummies. These were not just presented at the event but were also crashed live. In two crash tests the participants could convince themselves of the physical characteristics of the new dummies.

ESV Conference

At this year’s “International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles” (ESV) CTS was represented for the first time with an exhibition stand. At the conference taking place in the Netherlands which is supported i.a. by the US-Department of Transportation (NHTSA), the opportunity was given to exchange knowledge regarding the innovative progress on vehicle safety. Of course, the trade fair was accompanied by the new and innovative biofidelic dummy which was presented by Mr. Schimmelpfennig (Managing Partner CTS) and Mr. Mackel at the CTS-exhibition stand.

Safety Week and Automotive Testing Expo 2019

Last week CTS took part at the Safety Week and Automotive Testing Expo 2019 in Würzburg. Managing Director Peter Schimmelpfennig presented the latest generation of Biofidel dummies. The biofidelic dummy is the only dummy on the market which can both freely stand and sit. This and many other innovations of the latest dummy generation will also be on display this week at the Automotive Testing Expo Europe in Stuttgart. We would like to welcome you at the CTS booth which is located at booth number 1432. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Dummies on a journey

Once again, biofidelic dummies from the CTS-dummy manufacture leave the crash facility. This time around though sitting rather than lying down. Usually the biofidelic dummies are shipped in specially designed transportation boxes. This week, however, one customer decided to personally collect the dummies and brought them securely strapped in to their new destination.

Analysis of pedestrian accidents

The Allianz Centre for Technology examines pedestrian accidents not only with a conventional view on the frequency and the avoidability, but also with a future-orientated view on the perceptibility of the sensibility of automated driving functions. For this, their own database of damages as well as numerous accident statistics have been combined, analysed information derived for the designing of assistance systems. New evaluations show that in particular senior citizens are at danger at low collision speeds. It is especially with this victim-group that developed restrictions in mobility and the high vulnerability a major role play in accidents. To visualise the problem, crash tests were carried out with a focus on older pedestrians with walking assistance (walking-frames). As a result of, not only the particular dramatic of such accidents with vehicles moving at even slow speeds at the point of collision are highlighted, but also the challenges of future vehicle sensors and automated driving systems. The results of the crash tests flow into work groups such as “AHEAD” (Aggregated Homologation-proposal for EventRecorderData for Automated Driving), who address clarification issues of accidents of automated vehicles with the aid of the recorded accident data from the vehicle. The biofidelic dummy offers, with its special and unique properties, crucial advantages for these tests in comparison to other pedestrian dummies.

A skeleton at AZT

As of this week, a skeleton of the biofidelic dummy is being displayed at the Allianz Centre for Technology in Munich. The AZT is the competence centre of the Allianz for Automotive Technology and has already previously carried out a series of crash tests with the biofidelic dummy. The skeleton serves here as an exhibition piece and should give visitors an insight into the complexity of the insides of the biofidelic dummy.

Successful test performed according to TR - Mobile vehicle barriers

For the first time, a successful crash test was performed in Germany according to the Technical Guidelines of the Police (Police Technical Institute (PTI) at the DHPol: Technical Guidlines (TR) – Mobile vehicle barriers). At the CTS crash facility, a guideline that has been put into effect this year was applied for the first time – and with success. The Police, customers and also the crash test crew of Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Bührmann were highly satisfied with the results of their respective departments.
